The prototypical story of American sports heroism involves overcoming obstacles – poverty, illness, personal tragedy – with a combination of determination, skill, and luck to triumph. Often, these stories are exaggerated. Sometimes, they are lies. They can be, in the case of Lance Armstrong, Big Lies concealing that conceal wrongdoing and prop up a narrative that never really existed. And sometimes, they are baffling, pointless lies. Lies that made little difference, that had no reason to exist. Yet someone felt compelled to create them.
